In what is regarded as the greatest championship game in the long history of Iowa girls basketball, Union-Whitten beat Everly 113-107 in overtime, a classic duel that showcased two of the brightest stars ever to grace an Iowa basketball court - Denise for Union-Whitten and Jeanette Olson for Everly, both now members of the IGHSAU Hall of Fame. The payoff for their work came on March 16, 1968. They played on the hottest days of summer and, if they couldn't get in the gym during the winter, shoveled the snow off the court so they could keep shooting. Teammates often joined them and so did some of the boys from the school. There, you usually could find Denise Long and her cousin, Cindy Long, shooting at the two baskets. ![]() They made that happen with hours of practice, not only during the season, but year-round on an outdoor court in a small park in Whitten, across the street from the Community Church and just south of the fire station. The girls basketball team at Union-Whitten High School had all of that in 1968 and something else as well - a drive to make themselves the best players they could be. Written report is mandated, as required procedurally with a first and second offense. The school administration and game officials shall notify the State Office the following business day. However, more severe penalties may apply if warranted. The standard penalty for a second offense within one year of the initial offense, is school membership sanction and the violator is subject to a multi-date suspension. Players and coaches must watch this video before being able to return to play or coach. ![]() ![]() Ejected coaches must view the NFHS Teaching and Modeling Behavior Video. Ejected players must watch the NFHS Sportsmanship Video. The Offender must write a written summary of the events which led to the ejection with the State Office. The school administration must meet with the offender and file the Ejection Report form (found online at the IGHSAU website) with the State Office. Should a coach or player be ejected from a contest in any sport, the following procedure is in effect. If a player is serving a suspension, she may not be in uniform or participate in the contest(s) or pre-game warm-up, but local policy determines if she may be in street clothes on the bench, dugout, etc. He/She is not permitted to watch the contest(s) as a spectator unless he/she has a daughter playing in the contest(s). When a coach is serving a suspension, he/she may not coach and must be out of sight and sound of the contest venue. Any sanction issued by the school or State Office will be served on a subsequent date after review of the filed reports. If a coach/player is ejected from a game/match, he/she does not coach/play for the remainder of that game/match or any additional games/matches on that same date.
